About Us

Pragmatic Portfolios, LLC is a fee-only Registered Investment Adviser in Durham, North Carolina Steve Thorpethat provides practical, unbiased advice to assist clients in reaching their long term financial goals. I provide sensible investment management services coordinated across all of a client's investment accounts, through a practice intentionally structured to avoid conflicts of interest that are so common elsewhere in the financial industry.

Steven R. Thorpe is the founder and investment adviser representative of Pragmatic Portfolios, LLC. Continued observations of bad behavior by charlatans from Wall Street have often inspired Steve to help others navigate the sometimes-treacherous investment landscape. Building upon his lifelong fascination with investing, he has been advising on and managing investment portfolios on a pro-bono basis since the late 1980’s and starting in 2010 through this firm. This has included accounts and plans for individuals, high net-worth individuals, families, corporations and small businesses.

Steve has an analytical background with two degrees from the University at Albany: a B.S. (1987) summa cum laude with majors in Business Administration and Computer Science, and an M.S. (1988) in Computer Science. He has also completed North Carolina State University's financial planning curriculum that covers investment, financial, insurance, tax, estate, and retirement planning topics.

He is a member of the Financial Planning Association® and he founded the Research Triangle Park, NC area chapter of the Bogleheads®* investment interest group.

Steve has also passed the Series 65 examination that Investment Adviser Representatives are required to pass in order to provide investment advice. It was developed by the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and is administered through the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. (FINRA).
